Grammar and Writing Classes
GRAMMAR I – Basic Grammar with some spelling
In this class, we use Winston grammar to teach the parts of speech and basic grammar in a fun, easy, and manipulative way. The grammar portion includes explanation of the parts of speech, homework and tests. This class also uses the techniques of Beverly Adams-Gordon to improve spelling in a very multi-sensory manner. Her approach to spelling is fun and requires no word lists or homework. This class is recommended for any age as long as the student is able to read and write well, with clear distinction between upper and lower case letters.
Required Texts: Winston Grammar Basic Level Student Workbook, Winston Grammar Basic Level Supplemental Student Workbook, Winston Grammar Basic Level Card Set, Spelling Power Student Workbook.
GRAMMAR II – Basic Grammar Usage
In this class, we use Winston grammar Word Works not only to review the parts of speech and parts of a sentence, but to tackle such common usage problems that account for approximately 60% of the usage problems found in students’ writing. These include such confusing terms as “who” and “whom”, “sit” and “set”, “good” and “well”, “lie” and “lay” and others. This course is intended to follow the Grammar I – Basic Grammar class. Spelling may be added if time allows.
Required Texts: Winston Grammar Word Works Student Workbook and Card Set. For spelling, Spelling Power Student Workbook (they don’t need a new one if they bought one for Basic Grammar)
Grammar III – Advanced Grammar is planned for the following quarter.
